This is part of our Creative Writing: Finding Your Voice series, where kids were encouraged to free write and let whatever snippets/scenarios come alive on the page. by Caleb Brown Now the story starts on Saturday February 15, 1992. As we look into the window of a large sky blue Victorian house with white trim, we can see a Blue Heron as he wakes from a lovely slumber. He looks at his clock and he says out loud, "It is 9:32 am I have nothing to do here, and duty does not call for me; I might as well drive down to the French Quarter and have a look around.” So he stands up, puts on a baby blue suite with a black bow tie, and then his black bowler hat with a blue feather. As he walks outside of his house he notices it's a tad bit chilly. He continues walking and gets into his car to drive down to the Quarter. He finally arrives around 10 a.m. As a couple hours have passed from walking around, he notices a Serpent playing a gambling game with a few other animals. He wonders to himself, “What are they playing?” He walks up to the Serpent and he asks, ”What game is this?" As the Blue Heron points to the table with three playing cards on it, the Serpent replies "Oh, this? Why this is Three Card Monte! Would you like to play?" The Blue Heron answers "Well I don't know how to play!” "Well can I show you?" asks the Serpent. "Yes, gladly!" says the Blue Heron. So the Serpent goes on about how to play saying, "So as you see here, there are three cards on the table.” As he picks up two cards he states, "Two of the cards are black cards.” He sets both the cards down and he picks up one more as he says, ”And one of the cards is a red card; you always want to find the red card.” The Serpent then sets the red card down and starts shuffling them on the table face-down. “So what I am supposed to do is show you all three cards” he exclaims as he reveals the face of the cards. "And I then I put them on the table face down and move them side to side randomly. When I am done shuffling them you make a bet on which one is the red card" says the Serpent with a grin on his face. Then the Serpent continues, "How about a couple of practice rounds?” The Blue Heron says “Okay, why not!” After playing a couple of practice rounds the Blue Heron thinks the game is pretty easy. The Serpent then asks, "How about a real round where you bet where the red card is?” The Blue Heron responds, "Okay, I bet 5 dollars on the middle card to be red!” After flipping the card over the Snake exclaims "Okay! you win!" as he hands the Blue Heron his winnings. Then he bets 10 dollars on the right card to be red and promptly wins again. Then the Blue Heron says "I bet 50 dollars on the middle card!” He wins the 50 dollars, and says out loud, "This is some easy money; how about 100$ on the middle card?” Then the Serpent says "alright" with a smile as he picks up the middle card. and seeing that it was not red, the Blue Heron says "What! How?” Then the Serpent says with a smile "Awww man, I don't think you were super focused that round; how about another try?" The Blue Heron says "Yes! 500 dollars on the left card…all or nothing!" Again the Serpent slowly picks up the left card, and seeing that it was not red the Blue Heron yells "How did I not win? I kept my eye on it the entire time!" Then the serpent replies with "You win some, and you lose some!” With a huff the Blue Heron pays the Serpent his money and goes home. Some people would say a fool and his money are soon parted; but I would say, "Never play a man, or a snake at his own game!”
