I wish I knew then what I know now.  What am I talking about?  I’m talking about the natural way kids learn to read, and enjoy it, versus the way it is forced on them today.  I am grateful for where my son is now in his reading ability, but I cringe when I think about how it has been a struggle for him and how I didn’t make it any easier.  In this post, I share our reading story.

What I enjoy most about featuring celebrity homeschoolers is that I learn so many neat little facts that I never knew about the person, which makes me appreciate their story even more.  Today’s feature, Serena Williams, is no exception.  Usually, I feature homeschooled siblings together, but Venus and Serena have such powerful stories in their own right, that they deserve a separate space.

This morning I got a burst of warm, fuzzy encouragement from reading a post by a fellow homeschooling mom in my state homeschooling group.  Sydney Miller stated that homeschooling is a lifestyle choice and went on to explain why it was about more than just the educational benefits for her family.  Then  a host of other moms sound off as well.  I thought I’d share her message and list the common themes that came out of the discussion.  This post can be a source of encouragement for you as well.  Or if you have disapproving family members who still don’t get it, send them here!

Ryan Gosling is probably known for his infamous ‘Hey Girl’ memes just as much as his acting career.  What most people don’t know is that he was homeschooled at the age of ten.  He grew up in a small town in Ontario, Canada where all the males in his family worked at the paper mill.   He knew very early on though that he didn’t want that for his life.

"This is fun!”, I heard my son whisper to no one in particular.  I secretly smiled to myself because I wasn’t expecting that reaction to a math program.  My son used to enjoy doing math problems, but over the last year, that has changed as his interests have.  Today, he is happily plowing through his Smartick Method session, and I couldn't be more happier.

The other day I had an epiphany while reading A Wrinkle in Time with my son.  We were supposed to be reading it before going to see the movie, but at the pace we were going I knew we weren’t going to finish in time.  Why were we going so slow?  Because we were stopping every couple of pages to discuss concepts and things the characters mentioned in the dialogue.  That’s when it hit me that we were touching on all kinds of subjects just by reading this one book.  Even math!

More and more each week it seems like I'm having conversations about homeschooling, whether it's with parents considering it, or people who are just curious about our lifestyle.  Even though I don't always feel like talking about it, I recognize that we are walking billboards for the ideas and concepts that have allowed so many children to become awe-inspiring, well-rounded adults.  This week's Homeschooling Hero comes from Georgia.

Last week we talked about the challenges and advantages of homeschooling for only-child families.  Homeschooling any amount of children is never easy, but for parents of single children it can be intimidating to realize you are all they have during 'school time.'  That does not have to be the case though.  You don't have to become hermit crabs and spend all day at home alone.
