How to Teach at Home |

The world has returned it’s focus to the world of figure skating due to the epic biopic that came out late last year about Tonya Harding. As unbelievably funny as certain parts of the movie were, a lot of the realities of her upbringing were heart-breaking and sad. Tonya was raised by an abusive mother and bullied all throughout school. The saddest part is that she never got to realize her dream of becoming an Olympic champion. So on a happier note, I’d like to feature another famous figure skater from that period who was homeschooled and went on to be ranked as the most decorated figure skater in the U.S. Our Homeschooling Hero today is Michelle Kwan.

My boy picked up a pen today! He stapled together a few pieces of printing paper and decided he was going to write a book! Whaa?? Yes! He gave it a cover page with a title and included his name as the author. There was even a title for the first chapter. Why am I so excited about this? Because my son, Dee, who has proclaimed he is not a writer, and that he hates it (like most boys do), decided to write on his own today without prompting from me. Read on to find out how this came about. by Leslie Fobbs When I first learned that Condoleezza Rice was homeschooled, I was disappointed to find out that it was only for a year because of where her birthday landed for starting first grade. I dismissed it as not really homeschooling. After learning about Ryan Gosling, who also only stayed at home for a year, and reading more about Ms. Rice, I now feel differently. Homeschooling is valid no matter the reason, method, or length of time. Condoleezza’s homeschool story is especially inspiring when viewed with her future accomplishments in mind. I consider myself still relatively new to this homeschooling thing even though we’ve done it for almost two school years and have been through several different methods and platforms. One thing I’m learning through it all though is that homeschooling requires an odd, delicate balance. Odd because it’s inconsistent and forever changing. Delicate because it’s so sensitive, that the consequences can be dire if the scale is allowed to tip too far into one extreme or the other.

Today’s celebrity homeschooling heroes involve another set of siblings. They are three brothers - Nick, Joe, and Kevin - who make up the members of the popular boy band from the early 2000s, The Jonas Brothers. I have to admit I didn’t know much about them back then, but I always appreciate learning about famous homeschoolers who chose to be out of the box even before becoming well-known. Read on to learn more about the brothers' humble beginnings.

Yes, this is going to be another I-love-homeschooling post. When I say 'Y'all' though, I'm not talking about you, the reader. I'm talking about non-homeschoolers who are determined to keep everyone in the traditional box. As annoying as they can be sometimes, I'm always grateful for these little reminders of why I homeschool.

Today’s Homeschooling Hero is a throwback to a feature that was posted a month ago. It linked to an article written about Ella Kerrisk, a 16-year old professional photographer from Georgia. Well, after reading the article I was intrigued with more questions about her homeschooling experience and how she became a photographer. So, I decided to request an interview to get the scoop! I’m so happy she obliged as the time spent with Ella was a treat. Read on and share this inspirational story with your homeschooling teens and preteens. |
