How to Teach at Home

Every Day Is Not an Educational Epiphany

9/25/2019

With lots of exciting travels coming up for our family in the coming months, I was thisclose to making each outing an educational adventure.

And then I realized that’s probably the best way to ruin the fun and make learning a chore instead of organic and amazing. And I also had an uncomfortable realization about all of it too. One that many of you will likely relate to and not want to admit . . .

Yes, I DO Worry About Fitting It All In

After a convoluted and hard-won voyage, our homeschool focus is pretty solidly hackschool and interest-based, both his interests and mine as I obviously direct subject topics. He wasn’t exactly jumping up and down saying, “oh please, can we learn Old English next fall?!” for example - I thought of it. But I know he’ll find Beowulf to be a pretty epic tale (get it? ;)

But beyond a wild variety of non-typical topics, we have lots of extracurriculars. Tons. And I know our homeschool schedule irks people. So let me tell why I don't care about that - and what I DO worry about.

What is strewing? If you’re not into unschooling you’ve probably never heard of it. The dictionary generally defines strewing as this: To spread around; Scatter.  That kinda sounds like you're spreading seeds to grow a garden.  But think about it... you are!  We sow seeds of learning everyday for our children to grow.

“Mom, I don’t like when the teacher has to stop all the time to make kids be quiet”, my son, Dee*, said to me.  That was in kindergarten.  I knew then that something would have to change somewhere.

Today I’m just full of happiness and energy. We have SUCH an epic hackschool year planned for the kids in our group!

Hackschool? Yes! It’s when you piece together a bunch of things that work for your child/family/life to participate in exceptional educational and extracurricular opportunities. And in our group we not only participate in them, we CREATE them!

You can read our super long newsletter detailing them all - it was just sent out to our homeschool friends, but here’s a summary of what’s in store for our group activities:

How A Nationwide 'Hackschool' Is Born

He was just finishing second grade when I realized this wasn’t going to work for him – for us. School.

After agonizing over it, battling my own worries about the choice I was contemplating, and then pushing HARD to convince both my little and big guy that there was another option, and we could do it, we very hesitantly committed to TRYING homeschool. For a little while. Until we sorted something else out - till we found a school that was a “good fit” like the one he’d attended in California.

Meet Dani, An Unschool Mom

Hey y'all! I'm Dani Dickie. I have one child, a daughter who is now 7. She's never been to school. When I thought about sending her, it seemed like so much fruitless effort. Being tied to that schedule growing up was torture for me and I don't want to do that again. I was so relieved to realize I don't have to. There's nothing she would learn in school that she couldn't learn at home and there's so much she could miss. Also, she's hilarious. I'm not missing out on that.

World War 2: Unschool Homeschool Exploration

Thought I'd jump right in with a "day in the life" of an "unschool homeschool" day. Seems only right as I've started a group on the topic and all, hmm? Today wasn't exceptionally fascinating, but I think that's probably a good way to start, as I'm not trying to make anyone feel insecure about their own homeschool days - and TRUST me, some of our days are next level learning, yo!

But not today. Today we had a pediatrician appointment and a little guy feeling ouchy, so we let him go back to sleep for a bit. And then he woke up and we did things! Yay! Allow me to tell you a bit about it!

A Little Introduction

Hello. My name is Claire Herbert.

I am a wife and a mother to two amazing children. My daughter is 27, married and was schooled in the traditional manner of going to an actual school!

My son is 9 and began by being schooled in the traditional manner, but was switched to homeschool for a variety of reasons. He loves being homeschooled almost as much as I love homeschooling him.

People often ask me what homeschooling looks like each day. Here you go!

Each day, our learning is largely unstructured, though I make sure we hit some basics (including math, Latin, current events and writing). We read, discuss and experiment with science, history, economics and philosophy during the week as well, and have endless resources to guide our efforts - but as all of that happens one-on-one, it leaves a good chunk of the day available for him to explore interests on his own (and for me to write!).
