How to Teach at Home

Just Be Awesome, Little One

People often ask me what homeschooling looks like each day. Here you go!

Each day, our learning is largely unstructured, though I make sure we hit some basics (including math, Latin, current events and writing). We read, discuss and experiment with science, history, economics and philosophy during the week as well, and have endless resources to guide our efforts - but as all of that happens one-on-one, it leaves a good chunk of the day available for him to explore interests on his own (and for me to write!).

Some days, the freedom to choose can feel a bit overwhelming for my little guy, I think.

Should he practice guitar or piano, and write a song to accompany either? Some days he does!

Should he spend the afternoon going back and forth between clay modeling and riding his bike? That happens too!

Or should he double-down on his digital animating programs, which he loves, and work through that Java coding class (that's been a bit of a challenge, but he still pushes through)?

And some days, he wants to do it all and frustrates himself when he can't. And that's a lesson too.

So when he asks me the night before, "Mom, what should I do tomorrow?" This is my answer. The rest is cake ;)
