The popularity of homeschooling has increased pace in the past five years alone. Why? Perhaps, it’s because you can ensure your child is getting more than just a ‘generic’ education or your family lifestyle isn’t convenient for public school. Whatever the reason, a home-based education is an excellent choice.

Are you considering homeschooling your child in Nevada? Before you make a move, it’s important to abide by the educational laws and regulations of homeschooling set forth by the State of Nevada.

Each state is the U.S. has a very specific set of regulations for homeschooling. If you are thinking about teaching your child at home, you'll need to know the ins and outs of what needs to be done beforehand and during. In this series, Homeschooling Regulations by State, we'll explore information to help with the decision, what to do to get started and what to do correctly to continue.

The regulations, laws and suggestions in this post may not reflect the needs for your particular situation. Not all apply to each individual family. This will direct you to the states’ Board of Education or government education site.

To start homeschooling your child, make sure to formally withdraw your child from the public school system if the child is currently enrolled in the school. When it comes to the age factor vs. home-based education, the parents/guardians decide when the child is ready for certain academic structures.

Compulsory School Age
Nevada state law dictates that every child  between the ages of seven and eighteen must attend school.
Homeschooling Choices
The schooling options available in Nevada includes:
  • Public schools
  • Non-public schools
  • Private schools
  • Homeschool
Formally Withdrawing From Public School
If your child is currently enrolled in a public or private school, make sure to withdraw his admission at the end of the current year and before the beginning of next academic year. Each school has its own protocols and procedure and will assist you accordingly with the process. Contact your local school to inquire about withdrawing in the middle of the year.
Notice of Intent
A Notice of Intent form needs to be provided to the local school district. Information that should be included in the NoI:
  • Name of student
  • Age of student
  • Gender of student
  • Address of child and parent/guardian
  • A statement describing the child is the full responsibility of the parent/guardian and will be under their care for the duration of that year's education.
Record Keeping
It’s recommended to keep a detailed record of your child’s homeschooling program: i.e. quiz results, assessments, projects and more. An adequate record of the period will help in securing admission in any institute if you wish re-enter a public school.
Curriculum
Per NRS 388D.050, the homeschooled child must be taught all core subjects categorized in the following areas:
  • Mathematics
  • English Language Arts
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Geography
  • History
  • Government and Economics
The subjects are chosen by parents/guardians per the child’s educational progress and age.

Testing
Homeschooled children in Nevada aren’t required to take any standardized tests or assessments. In fact, the parents/guardians themselves devise an assessment plan to evaluate the child’s educational process and other problem-solving skills. And if you’re looking to homeschool your child, schedule to conduct thorough assessments, quiz, projects, and final term exams at home before promoting him/her to the next grade.

Following the above steps, you can start homeschooling your child right away. You can easily find the required forms on the Nevada Department of Education website.
