Each state is the U.S. has a very specific set of regulations for homeschooling. If you are thinking about teaching your child at home, you'll need to know the ins and outs of what needs to be done beforehand and during. In this series, Homeschooling Regulations by State, we'll explore information to help with the decision, what to do to get started and what to do correctly to continue.

Live in Georgia and want to homeschool?

Compulsory School Age
The compulsory attendance age for students in schools in Georgia is between 6-16 years. However,  if the child has attended a public school in the respective state when he/she was less than seven years of age, they can continue school thereafter.

Formally Withdrawing From Public School
If the student was already attending a public school in Georgia, after submitting the Declaration of Intent, he/she is required to inform the school and withdraw officially so that they don’t face any complications regarding their absence from school. This can be done by submitting a letter to the school attended.

In case you ever decide to enroll your homeschooled child in a public school in Georgia then the good news for you is that you don’t need to fulfill any legal requirements. The child will be assessed for their grade and subjects and placed in an equivalent grade.

Necessary Paperwork
Once the decision to homeschool a child has been finalized the official process in Georgia is simple. It involves:
  • Submitting a Declaration of Intent

The parents or guardians of the child are required to file their Declaration of Intent with the Georgia Department of Education. The respective document needs to be submitted via email, although fax and mail are also accepted. Include the following information on your submission:
  • Name and age of the child
  • The address where the home-based program is located
  • The dates of the school year

Record Keeping and Reporting
The Declaration of Intent needs to be submitted every year, for the course of the child’s homeschooling period. Keeping a printed copy is a good idea as it’s proof that the student has been homeschooled in the state of Georgia.

Homeschooled students in Georgia are tested on the basis of a nationally standardized achievement test, which is conducted every three years after the third grade. The students can be prepared for the respective tests by being enrolled in a test preparation program or they can be taught at home with books that familiarize them with its format and terminology. The results are maintained by the parents for future reference.

Other Important Things To Consider
Curriculum
It is mandatory that the following curriculum should be comprised within the instruction schedule in the following subjects:
  • Language arts
  • Mathematics
  • Social studies
  • Science

Requirements
Unlike other states of America, in the state of Georgia, it is mandatory for the parents of the homeschooled student to have a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Attendance
Attendance is essential for the homeschoolers in Georgia. They need to complete an equivalent of six months every year and around 4 hours of school every day.
